The good, the bad, the ugly.
What is good, what is bad, and what is ugly within design? These questions were the starting point of a 3-day workshop in the Faculty of Design, here in Darmstadt. Seperated into three groups (good, bad and ugly) we searched for representative statements, work samples, or visuals in the university library and presented the collected materials to the other groups. This process immediately sparked a discussion, as we found that categorising design works, designer statements and general design rules was extremely difficult, some even said wrong. Who were we to judge? And who were those designers who in turn, judge others? So we decided to display the collected statements and images in a single publication without any comment at all. The result is an eclectic compilation that questions rules, doctrines and design education in general. And it's up to the reader to decide whether s/he thinks something is good, bad or ugly. Participating students: Marijana Babic, Alexander Brade, Mathias Biegel, Linnea Erlich, Patrick Gasselsdorfer, Michael Helmle, Alexander Horn, Julia Krust, Florian Renschke, Julia Schumacher, Jan Volpp.
